Although World Children's Day has existed for a long time, it is only a public holiday in Thuringia – and only since 2019. Not only children and youth but also employees get a day off on September 20th.

Furthermore, World Children's Day is celebrated in nearly 145 other countries worldwide to highlight the needs and rights of children. Political activities and protests are also typical for this day.

World Children's Day has long been celebrated worldwide – its origins date back to the anniversary of the United Nations' adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

UNICEF Germany and the German Children's Fund demand "Every Child Needs a Future!"

This year's World Children's Day on September 20th is themed "Every Child Needs a Future!". UNICEF Germany and the German Children's Fund are calling for stronger political commitment to a better and fairer future for young people with this motto.
