And the great thing is not only that you’re doing something good for the environment, but also that you can fill the individual "doors" yourself each year. But where does the idea of the Advent calendar actually come from?
Advent Calendars – History and Origin
The history of the Advent calendar began in 1838. The head of the Protestant boys' rescue home "Rauhes Haus" near Hamburg—Johann Heinrich Wichern—apparently could no longer bear hearing the children's question about when Christmas would finally arrive. Thus, the idea arose to represent the remaining days. He placed 20 small red candles and 4 large white candles on an old wagon wheel. During daily devotions, the children were allowed to light one red candle. On the Advent Sundays, an additional white candle was lit.
Over the years, many different forms and ideas developed to beautify the pre-Christmas season and ease the impatience of children. Families, for example, hung Christmas-themed pictures on the wall or drew chalk lines on the door. Each Sunday had a long line, and every day the children were allowed to wipe one away. The first printed Advent calendar appeared only in 1902. It was published by the Protestant bookstore Friedrich Trümpler in Hamburg. The first chocolate Advent calendar came in 1958. Today, alongside toy or picture Advent calendars, it is one of the most frequently purchased calendars. Photo Advent calendars are also becoming increasingly popular, as are reusable, sustainable Advent calendars.

The Latin word adventus means "arrival." It stands for the spiritual and emotional preparation for the most important Christian celebration of the year: the birth of Jesus Christ. Although the form, style, and appearance of the Advent calendar have changed over time, the message remains the same: to bring joy and highlight the specialness and uniqueness of the Advent season. And of course, to increase the anticipation for Christmas Eve – for both young and old!
