Holiday tips for the whole family

Spending your summer holidays at home this year? That sounds boring? Not at all! Due to current circumstances, many families are choosing to spend their vacation at home this year. Sometimes a tight budget or commitments at home prevent traveling abroad. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have an unforgettable time. Small adventures can sometimes be right on your doorstep. Don’t believe it? Then read on: We have compiled our favorite holiday tips for children.

Summer is what you make of it!

Experience shows that it’s a bit harder to get into holiday mood at home. You might quickly check your emails or tackle the laundry piles, which don’t disappear by themselves. Sure, some things just have to be done, but try to consciously reduce phone time, plan outings, and let the household wait sometimes. Long-term projects like tax returns, deep cleaning, or the next building project are also off-limits. You’re on vacation, remember? So just relax and let your mind wander. This way, the little ones will also feel more relaxed. And you don’t have to worry about planning free time because that’s what our holiday tips for children are for!

Summer holidays at home – here are our holiday tips for children

Why always travel far when there’s so much beautiful stuff at home you haven’t experienced yet? You don’t always need a full wallet to plan adventures. We want your summer to be unforgettable and share our favorite leisure activities for home:

Star magic in a tent

Many associate holidays with a change of location and sleeping in unfamiliar beds. Even if you’re not going away this year, you can still get that holiday feeling! Just grab a sleeping bag, a tent, a sleeping mat, or an air mattress and head out to the garden – sleeping outside is a huge adventure for the little ones! Maybe a trip to the nearest campsite is an option? You could spend the evening looking for different constellations. Do you know the arrangement for your zodiac sign? Google it before your adventure and then look for it together in the night sky.

A day mini-vacation at the lake

The sun is shining, temperatures have passed 30 degrees, and you’re longing for a cool refreshment? The perfect day for a mini-vacation at the nearest bathing lake! You can really get into holiday mood here too. Maybe bring a ball or other games so it won’t get boring on site! Often there are also places to eat or a small kiosk where you can get a snack for lunch. That means no cooking for the day! Enjoy yourself and don’t forget to pack some watermelon, towels, and floaties for the little ones!

Bike tour with the whole family

A must in our holiday tips for children: an extensive bike tour with the whole family! Fresh air and exercise are good for everyone. When you’re out with the little ones, we recommend choosing a flatter route. Maybe you’ll pass a zoo or playground? Feel free to take a break there. The best places are usually found spontaneously.

Off to the fruit field – picking wild fruits yourself

Whether strawberries, raspberries, or watermelon – fresh fruit belongs to summer! Did you know that in Germany there are many wild fruit trees and bushes where you’re welcome to pick some? These include apple trees along the road, berry bushes, or cherry trees. Where exactly you can pick? You can find out at mundraub.org. There you’ll find an interactive map showing the exact locations of fruit trees or bushes near you. Give it a try! Alternatively, you can also search on Google for a nearby strawberry field. Picking wild fruits is definitely a great experience for the little ones!

Culinary evening – exotic flavors at home

Holidays also come with all kinds of foreign spices, dishes, and flavors. You don’t have to miss out on that during summer holidays at home either. How about a culinary evening where you dive into a foreign country? If you like, you can roll sushi with the kids. Alternatively, you can prepare many small bowls with delicious tapas and then enjoy them in the garden. Make it cozy and hang up some string lights. The right music can also add to the holiday atmosphere!

Make your own sidewalk chalk – it’s that easy!

Kids love drawing with sidewalk chalk in summer. That’s why our DIY guide can’t be missing from the family tips for children. Here’s what you need for homemade chalk:

  • Modeling plaster
  • Food coloring
  • Some water
  • Silikon molds of your choice
  • A container and a spoon for mixing

And here’s how it’s done:

1. First, mix the modeling plaster according to the package instructions. Stir until the consistency is nice and creamy.

2. Then stir in the food coloring.

3. Now fill the colorful mixture into the silicone molds.

4. After about 2 to 2.5 hours, you can pop the chalk out of the molds and let it dry for about 11 more hours. Voilà! Now it’s time: Ready, set, chalk!

So here’s our next tip: Create your own garden or vegetable bed together with the kids! Make sure to start with easy-care plants to avoid early disappointments for the little ones. Our recommendations for beginners: strawberries, radishes, rosemary, or basil.
