Cozy Through the Autumn
The days are getting shorter, it’s getting colder and often less cozy. The mood becomes calmer, and people tend to feel a bit melancholic and less active. But our children want to be entertained and kept busy, even in autumn, come rain or shine. Unfortunately, we sometimes don’t realize how beautiful autumn can be and what opportunities it offers.
Forest Walk
Especially during this dark time of year, it takes a bit of effort to leave the warm four walls. But the best remedy for the autumn blues is a long forest walk with the family. The fresh air and the colorful leaves have a positive effect on our mood. Since there is always so much to discover in the forest for children, it’s best to always bring a cloth bag or a pouch. Collecting pine cones, acorns, moss, or pieces of bark makes the walk seem much shorter for the kids. Here and there, you can find little enchanted spots along the path and invent stories about elves and other fairy tale creatures.
The treasures collected are perfect for decoration or craft materials at home. With acrylic or watercolor paints, the little ones can paint the pine and fir cones. These look great in a large glass vase or tied to ribbon when wrapping gifts.

Flying Kites
Children need plenty of exercise. The rough autumn wind offers the perfect opportunity to fly kites with the kids, for example combined with a little walk.
For little ones from 3 years old and beginners, smaller diamond-shaped kites and triangular delta kites with only one line are best. Diamond kites with colorful long tails are especially easy to control. Steering kites with two lines are more suitable for older children. When you see the leaves and branches moving well outside the window, it’s time to go. So dress warmly and head outside.
At home, children can get creative and make small kites for the windows.
For this you need:
- colored cardstock
- colored tissue paper
- white string or wool
Use a ruler to draw a large diamond on the cardstock and then a smaller diamond inside it with a 1-2 cm margin, so that when cutting out, you get a frame for the kite.
Now tear pieces of the colored tissue paper.
First, glue these pieces along the inside edge of the cardstock until the entire area is covered.
Then use a piece of string or wool as the kite string, which is glued to the bottom of the kite.
Cut small rectangles from the tissue paper and tie them as bows onto the string.
The kite is finished and looks especially beautiful shining on the windowpane.

Time to Cuddle
Of course, there are rainy days when no one wants to leave the warmth of the stove and it’s best to get cozy at home. To keep the children from getting bored, you need lots of ideas to keep the little rascals busy as best as possible. When the collection of games no longer offers anything new, and despite all the toys, no suggestion is met with enthusiasm, it gets tricky.
Where can children best use their creativity and dexterity? Building camps and forts. A few blankets, sheets, pillows, and chairs as supports, and let the imagination run free. There are countless possibilities for young architects to create a cozy refuge and a place to retreat. It can be a hideout from attackers, a castle, or simply an indoor tent. In such forts, you can also cuddle up and have stories read by the flashlight from mom or dad. For those who always want to be cozy, howa offers a large selection of play tents.
